Here at Mary Astell Academy, our pupils are not shy in expressing their opinions about life in school, so what better way to allow their voices to be heard than the opportunity to be a part of student council.

Currently based in Mary Astell Academy’s Wellbeing Hub, a space within school identified by pupils as safe and calm, pupils who have demonstrated positive behaviour and good attendance come together to share ideas and views on behalf of the student body. Recently, pupils have been involved in changing the school menu (commencing January 2023), assisting in choosing and organising end of term reward trips and charity events, having their say on activities for Character Education and discussing pupil behaviour.

By joining student council, our pupils help Mary Astell Academy see the views and struggles of young people in our local area, better helping us as a school understand and support them. On a more personal level, our pupils feel the benefit of being part of a team, and through appropriate discussion, learn valuable social skills, increase their confidence and self-esteem, improve communication skills and learn how to make informed and sensible decisions, preparing them for success in life after school.
