At Mary Astell Academy we understand the importance of developing physical skills, as well as academic knowledge, which is why we enable our pupils to explore a range of subjects during pathway lessons.

We aim to provide pupils with a range of opportunities for their future, whether these be based within further education or moving on into the workforce. One of the skills we believe is important to learn is construction, benefiting both the personal and professional lives of pupils. Teaching construction during pathways enables the development of a life skill, allowing pupils gain the knowledge about regular household fixes. Teaching construction also enables pupils to gain knowledge on potential career choices in trades within the industry.

Our work within construction focuses on a wide set of skills, ranging from beginner level to advanced level. Pupils who are new to construction can learn about potentially common jobs such as hanging wallpaper and doors, whilst advanced pupils are able to learn skills based within carpentry including creating wood joints, such as the dovetail design, as is shown within the pupils work examples.

Alongside practical work, pupils are taught about the construction industry, the health and safety risks which arise within these jobs and how to correctly deal with these issues. Pupils are able to experience a range of teaching techniques, both verbally and hands on, to ensure all individuals are experiencing an element of learning, which is correct for them.

We hope to continue exploring the practical side of construction during pathways, and aim to ensure pupils can explore further interest into this subject, in order to continue producing the excellent work that we see.
